Setting up the machines and resources in your shop that work gets done (as well as external processing)

Work Centers & Groups Explained

Work Centers are machines or resources in the shop. A collection of work centers that share the same behavior / have the same functionalities are called Work Groups. Work Centers and be configured in many ways but they should always assigned to at least one Work Group (but can also be assigned to many).

Below are some of the ways people use Work Groups to organize there operations:

  • Single: One machine, one user. (i.e. a drill press)

  • Pooled: Identical sub-resources that can be used, such as multiple device queue (i.e. 3D printer farms)

  • Collection: Varying sub-resources that can be used in a “check out system” (i.e. handheld tools)

  • Room: Unlimited users can sign in/out to resource.

Example of Work Centers and Work Groups

Simple example: think of a restaurant that has a few different appliances. Some of them are dual range / ovens, and some of them are just ranges and ovens.

Work Centers:

  • 2x Dual Range/Oven

  • 1x Oven

    3x Range

Setup:

Two work groups, ovens and ranges. The range/ovens are in both work groups.

Work Center & Work Group Module

The Work Centers page can be found under the “System Configuration” tab in the primary navigation menu of the StartProto system. See below for visual.

From the Resources page you can see a list of all the Resources (machines) that are in the StartProto system and manage all of the parameters around them. This page is pictured below.

Note that the tabs let you navigate around to view both work centers and work groups.

Adding Work Centers & Work Groups

Adding a work center and work group can be done by selecting the + New Work Center or the + New Work Groupbutton on the top right of the page. These will be different depending on which tab you’re on.

Add a Work Center

From here, you can fill in the needed information:

💡 Note that external work center signifies that this is a resource you can use for external processing done by another vendor. If it is checked, you can choose which Company it should be associated with. (note that this company must be set as a vendor).

Adding a Work Group

Adding a Work Group can be done by selecting the “Create Group” button on the top right of the Resource Group tab on the Resources page.

💡 The Hourly rate field lets you set a rate that is different from your default shop rate. This will now be the default used for any Processes and Operations that flow into this Work Group.

Editing Work Centers and Groups

To change a work center or group after it has been created, you can navigate to its detail page and edit it from there by pressing the edit button.
